What Is Pashmina?

Pashmina refers to the ultra-fine undercoat fibre of the Changthangi goat, native to the high-altitude Changthang plateau of Ladakh and Kashmir. At 12–16 microns in diameter, it is finer than the finest cashmere and one of the softest natural fibres on earth. The word pashmina derives from the Persian pashm, meaning “soft gold.”

Quality & Fibre Fineness

Not all pashmina is equal. Quality is determined by fibre diameter (measured in microns), ply, weave density, and region of origin. Genuine pashmina measures between 12 and 16 microns — the finer the micron count, the softer and more precious the shawl. Understanding fibre fineness helps you make an informed purchase and appreciate what you’re investing in.

Craftsmanship: How Pashmina Is Made

Every genuine pashmina shawl is the result of extraordinary hand labour. Fibre is collected by combing the goats in spring, then painstakingly de-haired, hand-spun on a traditional yinder spindle, and hand-woven on a wooden loom by master artisans in Kashmir. A single fine shawl can take weeks or months to complete — a process unchanged for centuries.

Authenticity: How to Identify Genuine Pashmina

The market is flooded with blended, synthetic, and mislabelled shawls. Knowing how to distinguish the real thing protects your investment. Key tests include the burn test (genuine pashmina smells of burnt hair, not plastic), the ring test (a full-size shawl passes through a finger ring), and checking for GI (Geographical Indication) certification on Kashmiri pieces.

History of Pashmina

Pashmina’s story spans more than a thousand years — from its origins in the royal courts of Kashmir in the 15th century, to the fever it inspired across Mughal India and Napoleonic Europe, to its revival as a modern luxury staple. Mughal emperors gifted pashmina shawls as the highest diplomatic honours; Napoleon is said to have commissioned them for Joséphine.

Styling Your Pashmina

One of pashmina’s greatest gifts is its versatility. A single shawl can be draped as an evening wrap, worn as a scarf, folded into a travel blanket, or styled as a head covering. The key is learning a few foundational drapes and letting the softness of the fabric do the rest — pashmina falls beautifully no matter how you wear it.

How to Care for Your Pashmina

With the right care, a quality pashmina shawl will last a lifetime and soften beautifully with each wear. Hand-wash in cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid wringing or tumble-drying — lay flat on a clean towel to dry. Store folded (never on a hanger) in a breathable cotton bag, away from direct sunlight and moths.
